Things I Learned This Week

Last night my husband complained about me using him as a human calculator all the time (Bill, what’s five times seven?), and without even thinking, I spat back, I don’t have time for math… My brain’s too busy doing awesome shit. That said, Things I Learned This Week might be on a summer semi-hiatus while I focus on writing. Which starts in earnest with a schedule and some discipline next week 🤞, though I will chime in throughout the summer if there’s enough learning going on. I do plan on posting about other things, and once I get past the Dirt Dauber Festival this weekend, I can settle into my desk more and build a routine. Something I’m terrible at!

And what is Dirt Dauber you might ask? Well, I’m a studio member at this amazing place here in San Marcos called Eye of the Dog Art Center. It’s full of talented folks who make art out of mud. Once a year, 70 or so artists come together to hawk their wares in one of the most beautiful spots in San Marcos. It’s Saturday (10 - 6) and Sunday (12 - 5), and there’s live bands both days, all day long, and hotdogs and contests and demonstrations. I’ll be there along with a ton of other potters selling my stuff and doing awesome shit. My booth is in the back in Fire Alley, so come find me. It’s a guaranteed good time for all.

Now, I'll leave you with a short list of stuff I learned this week.

• All the President’s Men is still a great movie. A snapshot of a time when America still had ethics and dignity. Plus, Redford’s beige corduroy suit is fire.

• Wil Wheaton stars in a new audiobook version of Stephen King’s novella, The Body, the basis for the film Stand by Me, in which Wheaton played Gordy. So good.

• Highlight from my son’s last radio show of the semester? Dream Sequence by Jane Revolver. Could die in this song and be happy.

• Alma Thomas (1891-1978) was the first Black woman to be included in the White House's permanent art collection in 2015. Geez. Way too late but gorgeous color!
